National Private Pilots Licence (NPPL)

Old Sarum Flying Club offers the 32 Hour course plus the 2 flying tests.  The new NPPL is intended to provide the leisure pilot with a less costly route to learn to fly in UK airspace.  The NPPL will allow you to fly solo and with up to 3 passengers.  Although the privileges are not as extensive as the full Private Pilots Licence (PPL) issued in line with the Joint Aviation Requirements (JAR) it does give you the following:

  • To fly a Single Engine Piston Aircraft with a maximum all up weight of less than 2000kg
  • To take up to 3 passengers.
  • To fly day VFR only with a minimum visibility of 5KM
  • To fly in UK airspace

The medical standard required is equivalent to a DVLA Group 2 (HGV).  There is no requirement to use an authorized CAA Medical examiner.

As with the PPL course there are 2 ways of paying, by the hour or taking advantage of the discounted pre-payment scheme.  The latter being the most popular, as shown by the list of items included, which are otherwise payable:
